University District Courtyard Apartments designed by b9 architects
Located in Seattle’s University District, this 4-story apartment building features 54 Small Efficiency Dwelling Units arranged around a central open-air courtyard. The courtyard serves as the heart of the project, housing all circulation and encouraging resident interaction while maximizing light and air at the site’s core. The front façade is composed of two contrasting gray cement board volumes connected by a striking exterior staircase made of powder-coated black steel. This staircase, along with coordinated planters, canopies, and columns, creates a strong visual identity. A landscaped pedestrian portal and boardwalk welcome visitors and residents into the courtyard, fostering an open connection between the street, the interior lobby, and shared amenity space.
