Project: Ship Street Apartments

Neighborhood: Ballard

Status: Completed in 2018

Building Type: Apartment

# Units: 22

This 22-unit infill apartment building takes a unique approach to density in Seattle’s Lowrise 3 Urban Villages/Centers. Instead of producing a solid building with double-loaded corridors, the proposal activates the center of the site by providing exterior circulation elevated over a central courtyard. This central space is significantly articulated through the use of varied materials and architectural elements.

The exterior walkways and stairs allow light and air to pass through the site and provides informal community spaces that further activate the courtyard below. A prominent entrance at the northwest corner of the site is clearly framed beneath a shallow overhang of the structure above. Apartments are accessed via a ramp that connects from the sidewalk to the central courtyard. Decks located along the street facade help create modulation and add scale to the project.
