howell duplex
The project creates a duplex in the rear yard of an existing 1930 two-story home in Seattle's Madison Valley neighborhood. The existing home is preserved while two row-house style homes are created, each with a modern interpretation of the "front stoop". The living space of each home is directly connected to the stoop, set just five feet back from the sidewalk. By providing parking in the rear setback of the lot below a green roofed carport we create an urban typology not readily available in Seattle. The two 1800 square-foot homes are each unique, taking advantage of site views and providing privacy within the building across the shared wall. Material distinction at the interior and exterior of the building highlights the volumes that provide programmatic support to the main living spaces. This creates a rhythmic façade and open spaces within.
