The project, currently in design, is a small-scale building containing four townhome units with parking beneath a green roof located in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. It is being designed to achieve the Passive House standard (Passivhaus in German where the standard originated in 1988) for energy efficiency in this project resulting in a building that requires minimal energy for space heating. We are also exploring designing the building as a Zero Energy building. We will achieve either standard by utilizing roof top photovoltaic panels (PV) for electricity generation and heating as well as maximizing insulation and providing thoughtful daylighting. The architecture reflects the building's progressive leanings. The need for a massive array of PV will is expressed in the architecture of the building. The homes will center onto an interior, vertical courtyard space from which people will come and go. This courtyard will serve as a place for people to experience informal interaction and bring additional natural light into the homes. The individual homes will all have direct access to the central courtyard in order to activate the communal space as much as possible.
